IMPORTANCE OF RATNA DHARANA

NAVARATNAS OR GEMSTONES

Based on the planetary positions in an astral chart(janma kundali), a planet is believed to bring to focus :

*
a particular behavioral trait
*
signify the effects of the planet’s running period

Gemstones are prescribed to either strengthen or balance the energies of these planets in question, i.e. strengthen weak planets so that they do create some good effect, or further strengthen already strong planets, such that their effect is more pronounced. As an example, someone may want to strengthen Mercury to cure any speech impediment or skin inflammation, as a weak Mercury is known to cause these ailments. A person may want to strengthen Saturn if it is a Raj Yoga causing planet, in that case, in Saturn’s dasha or bhukti, the results given by Saturn multiply. Surely all good and bad effects multiply at the same time, there is a need for balance.
How do people wear these stones? These stones have to be of specific weight (in carats, or in ratti). They are worn either in gold or in silver in appropriate finger, during Shukla Paksha, when the planet is in own/friendly sign, on the planet’s day of the week, in the morning before 7:00 AM and after chanting the ruling god’s name 108 times. Needless to say, these gems should be flawless as much as possible and should be of good quality.
Name Stone Weight Wear in…
Sun Ruby (Maanik) 2 Carats Gold, in ring finger
Moon Pearl (Moti) 2 Carats Silver, in ring finger
Mars Red Coral (Munga) 3 Carats Gold (pref. 18 carat) or Silver, in ring finger
Mercury Emerald (Panna) 1.5 carats Gold, in ring or little finger
Jupiter Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) 2 carats Gold, in index finger
Venus Diamond (Heera) 1 carat Gold or silver in middle finger
Saturn Blue Sapphire (Neelam) 2 carats Gold, in middle finger
Rahu Garnet(Gomed) 3 carats Gold or Silver, in middle finger
Ketu Cat’s eye (Lahsuniya) 3 carats Gold, in middle finger
When deciding which finger the gem should be worn on, astrologers always consult the planetary friendship table. Mercury is a natural friend of Sun, therefore you can wear Emerald in the ring finger, which belongs to Sun.
A Diamond is not for everyone! Firstly, you should always consult an astrologer before you decide to wear a diamond. Secondly, it should not be worn on the ring finger as all of us are made to believe by the cool and jazzy television commercials. It is a natural friend of Saturn, therefore it should be worn only on the middle finger. It is not a natural friend of Sun and hence ring finger is not the place for it.
Are there any alternatives to wearing these gemstones? Yes, there are:

*
There are cheaper alternatives available in the market. e.g. you can replace Pukhraj with Yellow Zircon for Jupiter. Clear Zircon can be substituted for a diamond etc.
*
You can choose to worship the ruling deity e.g. to strenghten Mercury, you could worship Lord Vishnu.
*
You can also adjust the lifestyle accordingly. e.g. if you do not prefer to wear a stone for Saturn, you could wear dull colours, e.g. brown, black, gray etc. Change the life style to bring in more discipline, meditation, etc.

To tell you the truth, I always believe that changes in lifestyle, along with worship/meditation always work better than wearing gemstones. Oh, you know what, I don’t have time for the morning pooja, can I wear a stone instead? It is like taking shortcuts, not always advisable…

KALASARPA YOGAM

A lot has been read, said and discussed about the Kalsarpa Yogam. This yogam, and please notice the choice of words - it is a yogam and _not_ a dosham, is caused when all the planets are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu. The figure on the side illustrates this point. If a person has Kalsarpa yogam in his kundali, Rahu and Ketu are said to limit the potential of the chart and not allow other important yogas to take effect. In practice, it is observed that this role of Rahu and Ketu diminishes over time and good things are just delayed for such people. Again, noted Astrologer Dr.B.V.Raman is of the opinion that if the ascendant is on the other axis while all the planets are hemmed on one side of the axis, then the evil arising out of Kala Sarpa Yogam almost gets neutralised.
Types of Kalsarpa Yogam
There are 12 types of Kalsarpa Yogam. I am sure readers are going to come back to me and ask me about Kal Amrita Yogam as well, but I do not think that Kal Amrita Yogam is a seperate yogam and would not like to comment on it.
1. Anant Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in Lagna, Ketu in seventh house: The person is prone to be target of conspiracies hatched by people supposedly close to him. The person is likely to lose out in matters of courts. Married life would be marred by differences between husband and wife.
2. Kulika Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in second house, Ketu in eighth: This combination is not good for the person’s health. Expenses would be more then the income and the financial situation would remain fairly mediocre. He has to struggle a lot in life to achieve something.
3. Vasuki Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in third house, Ketu in ninth: The person would have trouble dealing with his brothers and friends. Travel to foreign countries would create problems. The person having this combination in his chart should take precautions in deals by paying extra attention towards legal documentation.
4. Shankapal Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in fourth house, Ketu in tenth: The person with this combination would never be satisfied with his financial situation and would always strive for more. The person is prone to troubles relating to immovable property - e.g. land, houses and modes of conveyance - e.g. cars.
5. Padma Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in fifth house, Ketu in eleventh: The person would have trouble with children. The person should never try his luck in lottery, share markets, and anything where speculation is involved.
6. Mahapadma Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in sixth house, Ketu in twelfth: The person would not do well in relationships and would have a very pessimistic view of life.
7. Takshak Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in seventh house, Ketu in first: There is a need for the person to be extra careful in matter relating to married life and business partnerships.
8. Karkotik Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in eighth house, Ketu in second: The person does not benefit from any paternal property. There would be a lot of trust issues between the person and his friends. This combination is not good for health and Rahu being in eighth house is usually not considered good as it indicates a sudden and violent death.
9. Shankhnaad Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in ninth house, Ketu in third: This combination indicates problems from higher authorities, government of the day and local administration in the field of business and commerce.
10. Paatak Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in tenth house, Ketu in fourth: Rahu being in tenth house indicates problem in employment and higher authorities whom the person would report to during his/her job.
11. Vishakt Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in eleventh house, Ketu in fifth: This combination indicates a lot of problems between the person and his elder brother. The person would also remain away from his native place throughout his life. The person would be prone to problems like heart trouble, insomnia etc.
12. Sheshnag Kalsarpa Yogam - Rahu in twelfth house, Ketu in sixth: The person would be prone to problems from people whom he does not know - mysterious enemies.
Methods to reduce the effect of Kalsarpa Yogam
1. The first and foremost method to reduce the affect of Kalsarpa yoga is to pray to Lord Shiva in His Maharudra avatar on Mondays. RUDRASHTAKAM written by Goswami Tulasidas in Ramacharit Manas should be chanted regularly.
2. Wear a GOMEDHIKAM, about two and a half carets in size in the little finger.
3. Wear a special ring, shaped like a serpent with a small GOMEDCHIKAM at the head and a VAIDURYAM at the tail. This ring is to be worn in the middle finger. Take a look at the following images - I could not capture the scale correctly, but the size of the stones is actually pretty small - less than 4 mm in diameter.

Nine Planets or Nava Graha

There are nine planets according to Jyothisham they are Ravi (Sun) Chandra (Moon)
Kuja( ),Budha ( ),Guru ( ), Shukra ( ), Shani (Saturn),
Rahu, Ketu. These Nine Planets moves around the 12 raasis or birth sign, passing through 9 paadas of stars or nakshatras in each raasi. All the 12 lagnas or raasis rotate during the day. While the person takes birth on certain time, his or her future depends upon the grahas position at the time of the birth.
So the Nava Grahas or Nine planets shows a very important role in the persons career.
